ELL & Coronavirus

May 20, 2020

Letter from ELL President & Board of Directors:

ELL Families -

Well, it has been quite a journey over the past several weeks, and I appreciate your patience greatly.
I have some good news to share. Little League International recommends that all leagues consider extending their seasons as long as it complies with all local and state laws. In other words, "Play Ball!...if your State and local officials allow for it".

It looks highly probable that the San Diego Board of Supervisors will be submitting an Acceleration Plan along with Safety Protocols to the State of California (Governor Newsom). The plan is expected to be submitted this week.

We are hoping that the state will approve the plan that will allow for the return of youth sports, including baseball.

It is too speculative to give dates at this point, but if all goes well we may have the ability to return to playing baseball by early to mid June. It will entail certain restrictions and it will incorporate a gradual increase in activity from practicing to potential game play.

The ELL Board has met and will continue to meet to discuss several options. One thing that we can tell you is that we all want to provide a safe place for the kids to return to the fields as early as our state and local officials will allow.

Safety is our #1 priority. It is of utmost importance to the Board and all volunteers. Therefore, in light of these developments some tough decisions have been made by the Board regarding the rest of the season. Technically, our regular Spring Season ended on May 16th. At this time of the year we are usually focusing on tournament-play and All Stars. We are now faced with the decision to extend the season and allow a vehicle for the kids to play what we all love to do - and that is BASEBALL!

Here is what has been decided so far:

1) T-Ball and Rookie divisions will not be extended for the 2020 season -- the primary reason was due to safety concerns for the younger kids and expectation of strict safety protocols. Unfortunately, we will also not have access to enough field space to accommodate all divisions.

2) If all goes well, we will most likely extend the season for Minor B, Minor A, Majors and Juniors. Again, several things still need to fall in place and how the format will look is still under review. As we get further clarity on the position our state and local officials will take we will reveal plans and timelines on how we would like to return to getting the kids back on the fields.

Over the next few days, we will send a formal email regarding our refund policy for T-Ball and Rookie participants as well as those registrants that wish not to participate in the extended season. Please note: several large expenses were already made for the regular season so if any refunds apply it will be partial in nature.

As we continue to navigate our best way forward, please understand that our decision-making process is deliberate and thoughtful, and that our primary goals are the health and safety of our kids and volunteers.

We are all in this together and we thank you for your continued support and optimism.
